Overview
Vancouver Island is the size of Belgium and Denmark combined, and this 1,050 km circle route captures its full range — the Edwardian streets of Victoria, the storm-forged surf beaches of Tofino, the whale-rich Johnstone Strait, and the salmon rivers of Campbell River.
Start in Victoria, where afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress and a stroll through Butchart Gardens set the tone. The Pacific Rim Highway (Route 4) then crosses the island through Cathedral Grove's 800-year-old Douglas firs, dropping to the wild west coast at Ucluelet and Tofino — the surf capital of Canada.
The northern half of the loop is quieter and wilder. Campbell River is North America's salmon capital; Telegraph Cove is the launch point for orca-watching in Johnstone Strait; and Port Hardy sits at the terminus of the Inside Passage ferry to Prince Rupert. Return down the east coast via Comox and Parksville for the shortest, easiest driving of the trip.
