A portrait of Victoria

An essential stop.

Victoria is British Columbia's capital and its softest landing — a harbour city of hanging flower baskets, afternoon tea, and a copper-domed parliament lit by 3,500 bulbs at night. Whales surface in the strait, and the Pacific Rim is a two-hour drive away.

Field notes

Three ways to feel the place.

On the water

Orcas off the breakwater

Board a Zodiac at the Inner Harbour, head 20 minutes into Haro Strait, and wait. Resident orcas, transient pods, sometimes humpbacks and minkes — Victoria's whale-watching season runs from April through October and the success rate hovers above 95%.

In the gardens

Tea, tea, and Butchart at night

Take afternoon tea at the Empress, the ritual that put Victoria on the British map. Then drive 25 minutes to Butchart Gardens — go for the evening illumination in summer or the half-million bulbs of the spring prelude.

Just beyond

Drive the West Coast Road

Highway 14 unspools west to Sooke, China Beach, and the trailheads of the Juan de Fuca. Old-growth Sitka spruce, tide pools, and a hot springs cove if you push on to Port Renfrew.

Storm-watching down-island, mushroom forays in the rainforest.

Winter

Mildest winter in Canada — daffodils in February.
