Why this journey is special
The White Pass & Yukon Route is a 914mm narrow-gauge railway built during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898 — one of the steepest railways in North America and a designated International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, sharing that distinction with the Eiffel Tower and the Panama Canal. The summit climb out of Skagway delivers some of the most dramatic mountain railway scenery on the continent in a half-day round-trip.
Route description
Skagway, Alaska at sea level to the White Pass summit at 873 metres in approximately 32 kilometres — a continuous climb past glaciers, gorges and historic Gold Rush sites. Variants extend the trip to Fraser, British Columbia, and on to Carcross or Whitehorse, Yukon via motorcoach connection.

Best time to travel
Operates roughly mid-May through mid-September, coinciding with the Alaska cruise season. June through early August has the longest daylight and warmest weather; September brings tundra colour and quieter departures. Snow can close the summit even in shoulder season.

Accommodation

Onboard experience
Open-air vestibules between cars with full freedom to step outside during the climb, on-board narration with Gold Rush history, included bottled water, and limited bar service on some departures. Bring layers — the temperature drops noticeably at the summit even in July.
