Haida Gwaii Explorer

An archipelago at the edge of the map, reached by an overnight crossing.

Overview

Haida Gwaii sits roughly 100 km off British Columbia's north coast. The drivable portion is modest — a single highway up Graham Island — but few Canadian road trips ask so little driving and give back so much.

You arrive by BC Ferries from Prince Rupert or by air to Sandspit. From Skidegate, Highway 16 runs north through Tlell and Port Clements to Masset and the Tow Hill road, roughly 110 km one way as an estimate. Nearly everything worth doing sits within a short walk of that line: beaches, bog forest, surf breaks and the Haida Heritage Centre.

Haida Gwaii is the homeland of the Haida Nation, and access to cultural sites, including Gwaii Haanas, is managed with permits, guides and seasonal limits. Do not plan a visit to any cultural site from a blog post — confirm current access rules, fees and Watchmen programme details with the official managing bodies before you book flights or sailings.

Distances and driving times on this page are planning estimates measured door to door without stops. Confirm ferry sailings, seasonal road openings, park access, fuel availability and weather with the operator or provincial highway service before you leave.

Good to know

Frequently
asked.

Practical answers from travellers who have driven this route.

How do I get a vehicle there?
Most travellers sail from Prince Rupert with BC Ferries; the crossing takes many hours and books out in summer. Rental supply on the islands is limited, so reserve early either way.
Can I visit Gwaii Haanas independently?
Access to Gwaii Haanas is managed and typically requires orientation, permits and either a licensed operator or approved independent arrangements. Confirm current requirements with the official managing agencies well before your trip.
How much driving is there?
Very little — roughly 110 km each way on Graham Island. This trip is about time on beaches and in communities, not distance covered.
