Frequently asked questions

Quick answers.

When should I travel by rail in Canada?
Rocky Mountaineer runs mid-April through mid-October with peak wildlife in May/June and peak colour in late September. VIA Rail's Canadian and Ocean run year-round. Agawa Canyon's fall colour window is the last week of September through mid-October.
What's the difference between Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail?
Rocky Mountaineer is a daylight luxury tour train with hotels included and no sleeping cabins. VIA Rail runs sleeper trains (the Canadian, the Ocean) with cabins on board and a much lower price point.
Are meals included on Canadian rail journeys?
On Rocky Mountaineer, yes — all on-board meals are included. On VIA Rail, meals are included in Sleeper Plus and Prestige fares, not in Economy.
How far in advance should I book?
Six to twelve months for Rocky Mountaineer in summer and fall, and for VIA Prestige class. Three to six months for VIA Sleeper Plus.
