Camping in Northwest Territories

Camping in Northwest Territories

Northwest Territories, by campfire light.

NWT camping is geographic ambition — Wood Buffalo's salt plains, the Mackenzie's churn at Fort Simpson, and Nahanni's Virginia Falls (twice the height of Niagara, and zero crowds).

NWT camping is geographic ambition — Wood Buffalo's salt plains, the Mackenzie's churn at Fort Simpson, and Nahanni's Virginia Falls (twice the height of Niagara, and zero crowds). Most camping is territorial campgrounds along the highway system, with serious backcountry trips by floatplane.

Insider tips

Camp it like a local.

Calls that change a Northwest Territories trip — from which loop to ask for, to the weather window everyone else misses.

  • 01Yellowknife's Aurora Village offers heated-tepee camping for aurora chasers — a soft entry to the territory.
  • 02Wood Buffalo's bison and dark skies are wildly underrated — drive the Pine Lake loop.
  • 03If you're flying into Nahanni, book the operator before the dates.
  • 04Fuel and groceries: budget 50–80% above southern prices.

Season by season

Summer

Long days, full reservations, the warmest swims and the biggest skies.

Fall

Colour, fewer bugs, cooler nights and the best photography light of the year.

Winter

Hot-tents, snowshoes, aurora, hot springs — for the prepared.

FAQs

When can I see the aurora?+

Mid-August through April; the equinox windows (late August/late September, March) are peak.

Are there roads to the Arctic Ocean?+

Yes — the Dempster and Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk highways. Both are gravel. Bring two spares.

Bears?+

Black, grizzly and (on the coast) polar. Bear safety in NWT is not optional — take it seriously.
