The Skeena runs Jasper to Prince Rupert on the BC north coast over two daylight days with an overnight in Prince George — one of the least-known and most-scenic VIA routes. The Hudson Bay reaches Churchill from Winnipeg over two nights, the only rail link to a town famous for polar bears and beluga whales. And just across the Yukon border, the White Pass & Yukon Route narrow-gauge climbs the Gold Rush trail from Skagway. Together, they offer rail access to landscapes the highway system simply cannot reach.

Best time to travel
Churchill has two seasons that matter: July (belugas, summer light, twitchers) and October–November (polar bear season). The Hudson Bay train runs year-round but service has been variable; check current status. The Skeena runs in daylight mid-April through mid-October. White Pass & Yukon operates May through September, with summit-of-the-pass service the headline.

In Churchill, the Lazy Bear Lodge and the Tundra Inn are the rail-trip standards. In Prince Rupert, the Crest Hotel overlooks the harbour a short drive from the VIA station. In Skagway, the Westmark Inn is the long-standing rail-trip choice. Whitehorse offers the Edgewater Hotel on the riverfront for motorcoach arrivals.
Northern rail trips tend to be one-way — rail in, fly out. The exception is the Yukon loop, where White Pass & Yukon connects to Whitehorse and then to the Alaska Highway for road extensions deeper into Kluane and beyond.
