Why this journey is special
The Polar Bear Express is the only year-round ground link to Moosonee, a roadless James Bay community at the southern tip of Hudson Bay's salt-water reach. Operated by Ontario Northland from Cochrane, it is a working passenger and freight train — the train of choice for locals, students returning from school, and visitors seeking a genuine northern Ontario experience.
Route description
Cochrane to Moosonee, roughly 300 kilometres through the boreal forest and onto the Hudson Bay Lowlands. About 4–5 hours each way. The landscape transitions from black-spruce forest to muskeg to the open tidal flats approaching Moosonee.

Best time to travel
Service is operated by Ontario Northland with varying seasonal schedules — confirm current status before planning. Late June through early September is the most reliable visitor window, with the longest daylight and freighter canoe access to Moose Factory. Winter service has historically continued for community-essential trips.

Accommodation
This is a day train — accommodation is in Cochrane (Station Inn) before the trip and either back in Cochrane or at the Polar Bear Lodge in Moosonee overnight. Many travellers do one night in Moosonee with day-trip canoe transfer to Moose Factory.
Onboard experience
Working-train atmosphere — locals, students, and visitors mix in coach. Café service is limited. Bring layers for variable boreal weather and a packed lunch for longer waits.
