Wilderness drive · Saskatchewan
The prairie province nobody pictures: granite, pine and a thousand lakes.
Overview
Most people picture Saskatchewan as a grain field. Drive two hours north of Prince Albert and it becomes shield country: rock, jack pine and lake after lake, with the road as the only straight line.
The route runs north from Prince Albert through the national park, on to Lac La Ronge Provincial Park, then east on the Hanson Lake Road toward Creighton and the Manitoba boundary. Roughly 700 km as an estimate, and best spread over five days because the highlights are on the water, not the asphalt.
Lac La Ronge is one of the largest provincial parks in the province, with Nistowiak Falls reachable by boat and canoe routes running in every direction. Services thin out quickly; distances between fuel stops are long and cell coverage is patchy, so plan fuel and communications deliberately.
Distances and driving times on this page are planning estimates measured door to door without stops. Confirm ferry sailings, seasonal road openings, park access, fuel availability and weather with the operator or provincial highway service before you leave.
