Wilderness drive · Saskatchewan
Canada's darkest sky, the last mixed-grass prairie, and bison at large.
Overview
The Grasslands Route runs southwest from Regina through Canada's only prairie national park and the Cypress Hills — the highest point in Canada between the Rockies and Labrador. This is the emptiest quarter of the country: 500 km of coulee, sagebrush, and dark-sky preserves that hold plains bison, black-tailed prairie dogs, and Scotty the T. rex.
Regina and Moose Jaw make good starting bases (the RCMP Heritage Centre and Moose Jaw's Tunnels are worthwhile before you go rural). Southwest, the route reaches Grasslands National Park in two blocks — West Block (Val Marie, bison, ecotour road) and East Block (Killdeer Badlands, hoodoos, prime T. rex fossil beds).
The Cypress Hills — a plateau higher than Banff — rise from the prairie north of the US border. The Interprovincial Park spans Saskatchewan and Alberta with dark-sky observation, the historic Fort Walsh, and lodgepole pine at 1,400 m. Eastend, on the drive north from Grasslands, houses the T. rex Discovery Centre and Scotty — the largest T. rex ever unearthed.
