Georgian Bay Coastal Route

Ontario's freshwater coast — from the Bruce Peninsula to Killarney's white quartzite hills.

350 km4 daysEasyRV: Easy

Overview

Georgian Bay is a sea in miniature — 30,000 islands, granite domes, and Caribbean-blue water in the middle of Ontario. This 350 km route arcs from Collingwood at the base of the Niagara Escarpment, up the Bruce Peninsula to Tobermory, then across the North Channel to Killarney's LaCloche Mountains.

The southern anchor is Collingwood and the Blue Mountains — Ontario's ski country in winter, mountain-bike and hiking terrain in summer. The Bruce Peninsula runs 100 km north from Owen Sound to Tobermory, ending at Bruce Peninsula National Park's Grotto (a sea cave with astonishing turquoise water) and Fathom Five's shipwrecks.

From Tobermory, the Chi-Cheemaun ferry crosses to Manitoulin Island — the world's largest freshwater island — and Highway 6 continues to the mainland. The route ends in Killarney Provincial Park, where the white quartzite LaCloche Mountains rise from clear lakes the Group of Seven painted obsessively. Georgian Bay Islands National Park (accessed from Honey Harbour) is a worthwhile southern detour.
