Scenic Loop drive · Ontario
The Ottawa River road that trades urban Ottawa for Algonquin's eastern gate.
Overview
The Ottawa Valley Route runs 230 km northwest from Canada's capital along Highways 17 and 60, tracing the Ottawa River past historic river towns and Polish-heritage villages before reaching the eastern gate of Algonquin Provincial Park. It is Ottawa's classic weekend drive and delivers the region's most reliable fall colour.
The route follows the Ottawa River northwest from downtown Ottawa through Arnprior, Renfrew, and Pembroke — Loyalist and lumber-baron towns with restored waterfronts. Whitewater rafting on the Ottawa (near Beachburg) is the region's signature adventure and runs May through October.
West of Pembroke, Highway 60 climbs into the Algonquin Highlands past Wilno (Canada's oldest Polish settlement) and Barry's Bay. This is the eastern gate to Algonquin Provincial Park — the most-visited half of Ontario's flagship park, with Highway 60 corridor lodges, ranger canoe trips, and reliable moose sightings.
