A portrait of Toronto

An essential stop.

More than half of Torontonians were born outside Canada, and you can taste it on every block — Ethiopian on Bloor, Sichuan on Spadina, Portuguese on Dundas, Tibetan on Queen. Stitched together by streetcars and anchored by the CN Tower, Toronto is a city of neighbourhoods that reward slow, deliberate wandering.

Field notes

Three ways to feel the place.

Neighbourhood

An afternoon in Kensington

Start with a flat white at Pamenar, browse vintage on Augusta, eat a fish taco at Seven Lives, then drink a natural wine on the patio at Grey Gardens. Toronto's loosest neighbourhood is also its most photogenic.

On the water

A ferry to Ward's

Take the 15-minute ferry to Ward's Island, rent a bike at the dock, and ride the boardwalk to Hanlan's Point. Pack a swim, a bottle of rosé from St. Lawrence Market, and watch the skyline catch fire as the sun drops behind it.

After dark

Live music, every night

Toronto is a music town — jazz at the Rex, Canadian songwriters at Massey Hall, late-night sets at the Horseshoe Tavern, and on a good Tuesday, a $10 cover gets you something you'll talk about for years.

On the map

The six places
to anchor your trip.

A tour through the icons and the under-the-radar corners — laid out the way a local would walk you through.

  • 1

    CN Tower

553 m above the city — glass floor and EdgeWalk optional.

  • 2

    Toronto Islands

A car-free archipelago and the city's best skyline view.

  • 3

    Distillery District

Victorian industrial blocks, now galleries, bistros, and breweries.

  • 4

    Kensington Market

Bohemian streetscape — vintage, vegan, and very Toronto.

  • 5

    St. Lawrence Market

Named the world's best food market — peameal bacon mandatory.

  • 6

    Art Gallery of Ontario

Frank Gehry's glass spine wraps a world-class Group of Seven collection.

Year-round

Toronto through the seasons.

Spring

Cherry blossoms in High Park, usually peak the first week of May.

Summer

Caribana, Pride, and lakefront patios from May Two-Four onwards.

Autumn

TIFF in early September, then maple colour along the Don Valley.

Winter

Nathan Phillips Square skating, Cavalcade of Lights, and warm ramen on Dundas West.

Insider tips

From people who live there.

  • 01

Buy a Presto card on arrival — streetcars, subway, and the UP Express all use it.

  • 02

Skip the CN Tower restaurant; the view is identical from the observation deck for half the price.

  • 03

Avoid Yonge–Dundas at night and explore Ossington, Geary, or Leslieville for dinner instead.
