Overview
Before the Coquihalla, everyone drove the Fraser Canyon. Highway 1 still hangs on the canyon wall between Hope and Lytton, dives through seven tunnels, and delivers the most dramatic river scenery in southern British Columbia.
The route climbs from Hope to Yale, threads Hells Gate, and passes Lytton where the Thompson joins the Fraser. North of Cache Creek, Highway 97 becomes the Cariboo Wagon Road, running through the roadhouse towns numbered by their mileage from Lillooet — 100 Mile House, 150 Mile House — to Quesnel and the restored townsite of Barkerville.
This is a history drive as much as a scenery drive: the canyon carries the highway, two transcontinental railways and the river in the same narrow slot. Wildfire and rockfall have affected communities along this corridor in recent years; check current highway conditions and local visitor information before travelling.

Lytton to Cache Creek and the Cariboo
Climb out of the canyon into dry ranch country and follow Highway 97 north through the roadhouse towns.
Quesnel & Barkerville
Spend the day at the restored Barkerville historic townsite, then overnight in Wells or Quesnel.
Return south
Retrace the Cariboo Highway, or loop back via Highway 5 through the Thompson Valley for different scenery.
