An island of forest and bison rising straight out of the wheat.
Overview
Drive west from Winnipeg long enough and the flat breaks: the Manitoba Escarpment lifts 400 metres out of the plain, carrying an entire highland of aspen forest, lakes and a national park with a bison enclosure.
The loop runs Winnipeg–Neepawa–Wasagaming, then north through Dauphin and the Parkland lakes before returning through the Interlake or straight down Highway 16. Roughly 620 km as an estimate, comfortable in four days with two nights in the park.
Riding Mountain's townsite of Wasagaming has the feel of a 1930s resort village, and the park's grasslands hold elk, moose, black bear and a managed plains bison herd. Wildlife-viewing conditions, road access and any enclosure closures should be checked with Parks Canada on the day.

Riding Mountain National Park
Base at Wasagaming on Clear Lake; drive to the bison enclosure and walk the Ominnik Marsh boardwalk.
Park highlands and Dauphin
Cross the highlands on Highway 10, watch for wildlife at dusk, and visit Dauphin's Ukrainian heritage sites.
Parkland lakes and return
Loop past Lake Dauphin and the escarpment viewpoints, then return to Winnipeg.
