Okanagan Wine Route

Canada's most concentrated wine country, wrapped around a chain of warm lakes.

260 km4 daysEasyRV: Easy

Overview

The Okanagan Valley runs 260 km from the semi-desert of Osoyoos to the orchard hills above Vernon. Between them lie more than 200 wineries, five substantial lakes, and the warmest summer temperatures in Canada — a Napa-scale wine region on the 49th parallel.

The southern anchor is Osoyoos, a lakeside town in Canada's only true desert. From here, Highway 97 climbs north through Oliver's 'Wine Capital of Canada' vineyards, past the black-sage bench of Okanagan Falls, and up to Penticton at the south end of Okanagan Lake. The Naramata Bench road east of Penticton is the region's most concentrated winery strip.

North of Penticton, the valley opens into Kelowna — the largest city and gastronomic hub, with more than 40 wineries within a 20-minute drive. Beyond Kelowna, Vernon marks the transition to orchard country and Silver Star ski hill. The whole route can be done in a long weekend, but four days lets you swim, taste, and dine without rushing.

Before you go

The prep checklist.

Practical things to lock in before you leave the driveway.

Best for: Couples · Solo · Photographers
  • Reserve winery tastings 1–2 weeks ahead in summer.
  • Hire a wine-tour driver — Canadian impaired-driving penalties are severe.
  • Book Osoyoos or Naramata lodging 2+ months ahead for July/August.
  • Cycle the Kettle Valley Rail Trail on Naramata Bench — free, spectacular, all downhill east-to-west.
  • September (harvest) is the sweet spot: fewer crowds, more events.

Good to know

Frequently
asked.

Practical answers from travellers who have driven this route.

When is the best time to visit?
Late May to early October covers the growing season. September (harvest) is the most atmospheric; July–August is the busiest and hottest. Icewine tastings in January are a niche winter draw.
Do I need to book winery tastings?
Most wineries require reservations for tastings, especially the destination properties (Mission Hill, Burrowing Owl, Nk'Mip). Book 1–2 weeks ahead in summer.
Can I drink and drive?
No — Canadian impaired-driving laws are strict. Hire a winery tour driver, use the tasting-room spittoons, or base yourself in a walkable area like downtown Penticton or Kelowna.
