Overview
The Eastern Townships — Cantons-de-l'Est — occupy the corner of Québec that borders Vermont. Rolling Appalachian hills, Anglophone-Loyalist villages, monastic dairies, and vineyards make this a distinctly non-Laurentian slice of Québec. The 300 km loop east of Montréal delivers wine trails, cheese trails, and the province's most concentrated fall foliage.
The western anchor is Bromont — outlet-shopping village turned four-season resort. South from Bromont, the Route des Vins (Wine Route) threads Dunham and Sutton vineyards along the Vermont line. Magog sits on the north end of Lake Memphrémagog with the Benedictine Abbaye Saint-Benoît-du-Lac (of the famous blue cheese) on the opposite shore.
East of Magog, Mont-Orford National Park delivers a paved summit road and a family ski hill in winter. North Hatley — an Edwardian resort village on Lake Massawippi — closes the loop with the historic Manoir Hovey inn. Fall foliage peaks the last week of September; Bromont's Zoo Sauvage and the Sherbrooke gorge round out the family itinerary.
