Overview
Highway 11 does everything the famous parkways do, except attract crowds. It runs west from Rocky Mountain House to meet the Icefields Parkway at Saskatchewan River Crossing, and it is the best-value mountain drive in Alberta.
The highway follows the North Saskatchewan River past Abraham Lake, a reservoir known for the methane bubbles trapped in its winter ice, then climbs into the front ranges at Kootenay Plains. Roughly 235 km as an estimate — an easy day, or a much better two with hikes at Siffleur Falls and Crescent Falls.
Because most of the route lies outside the national parks, camping and trailhead access are managed provincially and dispersed camping rules vary by area. Confirm current campground openings and any fire restrictions with Alberta Parks and the local forest district.

- Is there fuel along the way?
- Services are thin west of Nordegg and seasonal at the Crossing. Fill up in Rocky Mountain House and treat the Crossing as a bonus rather than a plan.
- What about the famous ice bubbles?
- They form on Abraham Lake in winter. Ice conditions are variable and can be dangerous; go with a guide and never assess lake ice yourself.
