A portrait of Jasper

An essential stop.

Jasper is Banff's roomier, wilder northern cousin — a mountain town wrapped by Canada's largest Rocky Mountain national park, where elk wander the streets, glaciers sit a morning drive away, and the night sky is protected as one of the world's largest accessible dark-sky preserves.

Field notes

Three ways to feel the place.

On the water

Morning on Maligne

Go early. The road to Maligne Lake threads past Medicine Lake and moose marshes before the tour boats start. By the time Spirit Island appears, the light is still low enough to make the mountains look carved rather than photographed.

After dark

A sky worth staying up for

Jasper's dark-sky preserve is not a slogan. Step outside town after midnight in October and the Milky Way sharpens above the ridges; on active nights, aurora curtains can ripple over Pyramid Mountain.

On the road

The northern half of the Parkway

The Icefields Parkway's final run into Jasper is the quieter half: Sunwapta Falls, Athabasca Falls, and long pullouts where bighorn sheep treat the highway like a salt lick.

Year-round

Jasper through the seasons.

Spring

Waterfalls thunder with snowmelt while higher trails remain quiet.

Elk rut, golden aspens, and the Jasper Dark Sky Festival in October.

Winter

Marmot Basin skiing, frozen canyon walks, and quieter lodge rates.

Insider tips

From people who live there.

  • 01

Book Maligne Lake cruises early in summer; morning departures have the calmest water.

  • 02

Drive the Icefields Parkway with a full tank — services are sparse and weather changes quickly.

  • 03

Use Jasper as the slower Rockies base if Banff lodging is sold out or too crowded.
