A portrait of Calgary

An essential stop.

Calgary is the gateway to the Canadian Rockies — a fast-growing prairie capital where glass towers rise out of the chinook winds, the world's largest rodeo takes over for ten days every July, and a 90-minute drive west drops you into Banff National Park.

Field notes

Three ways to feel the place.

On two wheels

The Bow River Pathway

Calgary has one of the longest urban pathway systems on the continent. Rent a bike at Eau Claire, ride the Bow east past the Peace Bridge and Inglewood's brick warehouses, and lunch on a patio in East Village with the river running quietly beside you.

À table

Where the chefs eat

Calgary's food scene has quietly become one of Canada's best — Pigeonhole for natural wine, Major Tom for the view, Bar Von Der Fels for a five-course Friday, and Charbar in Simmons for wood-fired beef from Alberta ranches a short drive west.

Just beyond

An hour to the mountains

It's 90 minutes from downtown to the Banff gate. Stop at Cochrane for ice cream at MacKay's, take the back road through Bragg Creek for the long way, or push straight to Canmore for an evening on the patio at Tavern 1883.

Year-round

Calgary through the seasons.

Spring

Chinook winds melt the snow in a single afternoon; tulips by mid-April.

Summer

Stampede in July, then long evenings on Bow River patios until 10 p.m.

Autumn

Golden aspens along the Bow; the clearest mountain views of the year.

Winter

Crisp blue-sky days, world-class ski resorts within two hours west.

Insider tips

From people who live there.

  • 01

Stampede is unbeatable but pricey — book hotels six months ahead or stay in Airdrie.

  • 02

The +15 skywalk network connects downtown above the streets; useful in any season.

  • 03

Pair two nights in Calgary with three in Banff and one in Lake Louise for the classic week.
