Overview
Highway 3 is the road most visitors mean when they say they want to see Nova Scotia: granite headlands, white churches, wooden fishing sheds and a UNESCO-listed town.
The route runs Halifax–Peggy's Cove–Chester–Mahone Bay–Lunenburg–Liverpool–Shelburne–Yarmouth, roughly 340 km as an estimate. Take the coastal 3 rather than Highway 103, or you will simply have driven past all of it.
Old Town Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the finest surviving example of a planned British colonial town in North America. Peggy's Cove is spectacular and dangerous in equal measure: the black wave-washed rock is genuinely lethal and people are swept off it. Stay on the light-coloured granite.
