Waiting with the bears
A polar bear appears as a cream-coloured shape on the horizon, then another. The buggy goes quiet. They are not performing; they are waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze, and you happen to be there for the pause.

A portrait of Churchill
Churchill is a small northern town with an outsized place in the Canadian imagination — the polar bear capital of the world in autumn, a beluga nursery in summer, and one of the most memorable aurora bases in winter.

On the tundra

On the river
In July, the Churchill River turns white with belugas. They roll beside zodiacs and kayaks, squeaking and clicking through the hull as if the whole estuary has become a nursery.
By rail
The train from Winnipeg takes two nights through boreal forest and muskeg. It is slow, imperfect, and exactly the right introduction to a town that cannot be understood quickly.

Do not walk beyond town limits without local guidance — bears can appear anywhere.
Pack warmer than you think, even in shoulder season; Hudson Bay changes the weather fast.
