Visas, eTA & Entry Requirements

Whether you need an eTA, a visitor visa, or just a passport — and what to expect at the border.

Overview

Canada welcomes more than 20 million international visitors a year, and most arrive under one of two simple frameworks: the eTA for visa-exempt travellers, or a Temporary Resident Visa for everyone else.

eTA — Electronic Travel Authorization

Citizens of visa-exempt countries (UK, EU, Australia, Japan, and most of Latin America) need an eTA to fly into Canada. It costs CAD $7, is valid for five years, and is usually approved within minutes. Apply only through the official Government of Canada website — third-party sites charge inflated fees.

Visitor visas (TRV)

Travellers from countries not on the visa-exempt list need a Temporary Resident Visa. Processing takes anywhere from two weeks to several months depending on your home country, so apply well in advance. A TRV is a sticker placed in your passport.

US citizens

American citizens do not need an eTA or visa for tourism stays up to six months — a valid US passport is sufficient. Permanent residents of the US need both a green card and an eTA if flying in.

At the border

Be ready to show proof of onward travel, accommodation bookings for your first few nights, and evidence of sufficient funds. Cannabis is legal in Canada but cannot be carried across any international border, in either direction.

Quick tips

  • Apply for an eTA at canada.ca/eta — never a third-party site
  • Bring printed copies of bookings if your phone dies at the border
  • Standard tourist stays are six months — ask for an extension on entry if you need more

Good to know

Frequently
asked.

Straight answers from travellers who have been there.

Do I need a visa if I'm just transiting through Canada?
Most travellers need an eTA or visa even for transit. US citizens and some exemptions apply, but check the official Government of Canada transit rules before booking.
How long can I stay in Canada as a tourist?
Standard entry is up to six months. If you need longer, ask the border officer for the extension when you enter, or apply inland before your status expires.
Can I work or study on a tourist visa or eTA?
No. The eTA and visitor visa are strictly for tourism. Working or enrolling in long-term study requires the appropriate permit.
What happens if my eTA application is denied?
You may be eligible for a Temporary Resident Visa instead. A denial usually means further review is needed, not a permanent ban.
