Every campground on this site is reviewed against the same framework. Here is exactly what we measure, what we ignore, and what we mean when we call a site a 'hidden gem'.
The five things we measure
Site setting (privacy, view, tree cover, soundscape), amenities (showers, water, electric, dump station, playground), wildlife and nature (proximity to trails, lakes, wildlife corridors), operational quality (staff, reservation experience, cleanliness), and value (cost relative to comparable sites in the region).
Scores explained
Family-friendliness score (1–10) weights washroom proximity, playgrounds, swimming, and easy trails. Hidden-gem score (1–10) weights scenic value, uniqueness, low traffic, and the unlikelihood of a TikTok video. Both are deliberately distinct — a 10/10 family park rarely scores high as a hidden gem.
What we ignore
Wi-Fi (it's not why people camp), reception (most parks have none, by design), and amenity inflation. A vault toilet in a stunning setting can beat a flush toilet in a parking lot.
What 'hidden gem' actually means
A 9 or 10 hidden-gem score means: under 30% of campers are repeat visitors, the campground is more than two hours from the nearest major city, and the surrounding nature is at least one league above the campground itself. It does not mean inconvenient — it means deliberate.
Editor's tips
The small things that change a trip.
- Trust score deltas more than absolute numbers — a 7 here may be an 8 elsewhere.
- Read the 'best for' tags — they correlate more strongly than ratings.
- Verify operational details with the campground or Parks Canada before booking.
